What I liked

I love the people and the atmosphere. Urban has great vibes and a really great work environment. I love when customers ask for my opinion on clothes and how to style items.

What I wish was different

Being understaffed requires work to be picked up by employees who are already working, so it can get overwhelming. Too much to get done with not enough time or people.

Advice

If you want a place to meet lifelong friends and learn life experiences, this is the place to work. You learn so much about yourself and the world.

What I liked

Working here gave me opportunities to improve my adaptability, hospitality, and communication skills. This is suitable for those who are interested a career in public services, because you will learn how to work in a quick-paced environment while providing exceptional service to a variety of customers.

What I wish was different

I wish I received better training when I started working. I was assigned certain roles during my shifts that I was never trained to perform, leading to poor customer interactions that could've been avoided as well as poor cooperation between co-workers.

Web Merchandising Intern

June - August 2022 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I loved being able to work with different teams at the corporate office. In my position, I was mainly working with the web department that handled marketing and site aesthetics, maintenance, and promotions. I got to work with the Style, Buying, Paid Marketing, and Social Media team. For my specific role, I enjoyed being able to work closely with the sample coordinator collecting merchandise to be used for marketing campaigns and messaging.

What I wish was different

I wish my initial orientation and introduction to company culture and my role would have been more extensive. During the first couple weeks of my internship, I had to figure out what I was supposed to do on my own and wasn't given much structure. This was partly because my team had never had an intern before, so I understood the lack of organization. I also wish the intern events they hosted (such as meetings with the executive heads) would have been held earlier in the program. By the time the intern events were held, we didn't have much time to reach out and connect with them.

Advice

I would say learn as much as you can! Urban outfitters employees are very willing to teach you and value their interns' input. Also, don't be afraid to get out there to meet other interns and connect with people on your team. Utilize every resource you can and always try to do more!

What I liked

I enjoyed the experience at Urban as everyone was very welcoming and friendly when I joined the company. My managers trained me well and I felt like I was prepared when I came in everyday.

What I wish was different

With the short time I worked there, I don't wish anything had been different. It did get difficult at times on the weekends with the amount of customers that would come into the store, but I feel like I got enough help from my other sales associates and managers.

Advice

Retail positions can be difficult if the store you work at is popular or in a popular area. You have to be prepared to work under pressure and deal with difficult situations. You are also going to come across customers that are negative but you have to learn to deal with them in a composed manner.

June - August 2021 • Natick, MA

What I liked

I enjoyed every single person I worked with, everyone was very friendly and welcoming and helped me feel like a part of their team from day 1.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change anything. They scheduled me for plenty of hours during each week, which was perfect for me, as I wanted to work for as much of the summer as possible. In some of my past summer jobs, I had an issue with getting hours, but URBN scheduled me for my ideal amount of hours each week.

Advice

Since this is a retail job, it's a great place to build confidence in talking to new people and learn how to work as a team to ensure the store performs to the best of its ability.

June - August 2019 • Short Hills, NJ

What I liked

I liked the perks that they offered, such as a discount at my favorite stores and how sweet and helpful my coworkers were. I also liked helping people find clothes and things like that, it's really fun.

What I wish was different

I wish I was trained in the cash register and had more opportunities to work in different areas I didn't get to work in the entire summer.

Advice

I would share that whoever has this job to not get discouraged when customers are a little less than kind, they may not realize they are being rude.

Sales Associate/Beauty Specialist

September 2016 • Brea, CA

What I liked

I love how my coworkers and even management is very lax and accepting. I have never worked with a more appreciative management team and for that I am grateful. It's easy to request time off in comparison to for example, a restaurant job and there is no set dress code other than to come however you'd like! An overall, great place to work minus the occasional rude customer.

What I wish was different

I wish raises were given more frequently. I've been with the company for over three years and counting and I can only remember getting a couple of ~10% pay increases. I also wish that it were a little easier to move up. Again, I've been there for over three years and promotions are rarely given however, that is also due to how the store is structured to run since there are a small set number of "higher up" employees and those positions aren't usually vacant.

Advice

I would advise anyone thinking about working for Urban Outfitters to expect a respectful yet fun environment to work. If anyone is thinking about trying to move up the ranks by starting out as a sales associate, you may have a long journey ahead of you since it is pretty difficult to move up.

Buying Intern

June - August 2019 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I liked the responsibility that I had as an intern. I was doing every part of the process, going to every meeting, and doing work that was sent out to the whole company. I learned so much and got to touch so many different parts of the company. It was cool to see things that I had done were having an impact. The campus is absolutely beautiful and the people are amazing.

What I wish was different

I was really stressed because I was filling in for someone who had quit our team as an intern, but I think that was a unique scenario. The first time I interned at URBN the summer prior, I loved my experience.

Advice

When you are done with your work, offer to help out other teams. It's a great way to meet other people at the company and see different parts of the business. Go to every Intern event and make the most out of your experience!
