Great experience being able to shadow a winemaker for harvest. Learned a lot about decision making process during wine processing.

What I wish was different

Better communication prior to the internship, had to commute 1 hr to and from work because wasn’t told where my worksite would be.

Process Technology Intern

What I liked

I loved the welcoming culture and the wide variety of projects I was able to work on. I found my work as an intern to be meaningful and allowed me to see what a future career at Gallo could look like!

What I wish was different

The on-boarding process was poor and they did little to help you find housing accommodations.

Advice

Through this 6 month experience take advantage every opportunity and say yes to every new experience.

Sales Leadership Development Program Intern

What I liked

I absolutely loved my internship at E. & J. Gallo Winery this past summer in the Sales Leadership Development Program! The program was entirely virtual, but the information I learned about the Wine & Spirits Industry was truly invaluable! This internship was the best experience that I have ever had. I had the opportunity to meet with company employees in a variety of career paths and roles, work on my own individual project over the partnerships between New Amsterdam Vodka x Barstool Sports and Dark Horse Wine x Draft Kings, and taste a variety of wines and spirits through educational tastings. Working at E. & J. Gallo Winery was an absolute dream! I am so excited to continue my career with E. & J. Gallo Winery after graduation in May 2021!

What I wish was different

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, my entire internship experience was virtual. I would not change anything regarding the content of my internship, but I do wish that it could have been in person! I really missed out on getting to spend time with the other interns in person because the program was entirely virtual, but I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to still have an internship during the global pandemic!

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share about this experience is to always ask questions! The employees at E. & J. Gallo Winery want to help you expand your knowledge of the Wine & Spirits Industry, so it is completely okay to not understand something or not know the answer to something. Asking questions not only allows you to enhance your knowledge regarding wine and spirits, but it also shows that you are engaged and that you are interested in the topics that you are learning about.

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to be part of a team with highly experienced individuals in the IT department where I could learn new technologies and learn about (and be part of) the movement towards best practices regarding software development and data processing automation.

What I wish was different

I wish the communication (across all levels i.e. verbal, written) was better and that good communication habits were more enforced.

Advice

Always keep learning and understand that right now you might not be best and that you will be someday through discipline and perseverance. There is so much you don't know that you don't know, so go out there and find it.

What I liked

I really liked that the company put career growth front and center throughout my tenure. They consistently providing training to interns and direct feedback to allow me to be successful in my role. I was able to work alongside individuals in all different roles within the organization to get an overview of how the business works and where I could potentially end up. Upper management was also involved in the internship program, which emphasizes how much importance they place on the intern program. I was tasked with completing an intern project as well to wrap up my summer spent with Gallo.

What I wish was different

The internship program was super well-organized and efficiently operated. I was provided with all of the support I needed in order to be successful. I wish that the internship was longer, it was only a 6-week program.

Advice

I would recommend being curious, open-minded, and hardworking. Go above and beyond in everything you do to prove your diligence and dedication to the organization.

What I liked

I love the people! They are so nice, patient, and caring and they act like being a part of the team actually means something. I like the work, but sometimes it could be dry, but it's the people that really made me like it here.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten to start out in Marketing and Packing instead of distribution, just because of the work itself. My current department had more of a marketing connection and I found it more interesting.

Advice

Be proactive! Email people and get to know them and make connections because they are almost all willing to help you!

Level of independence in terms of decision-making, and team was extremely supportive and fun to be around

What I wish was different

Location. Modesto, CA is in the central valley, and I wish I could work in that department without spending my twenties in a town like that.

Advice

Take on responsibility until you fail, and always take time to listen to others in order to understand their path/experience. Both of these help you realize the potential you don't know you have.

What I liked

E. & J. Gallo Winery gave me a lot of responsibility, by assigning me my own projects and giving me multiple tasks at a time, without overwhelming me. I got to work in multidisciplinary team. I also love the company culture. There are great perks (if you're over 21)!

What I wish was different

The location isn't ideal, but it is close enough to multiple awesome locations for weekend trips!

The compensation, and living stipend was very great. The company and internship was amazing! Every day was different, and I learned a lot about the wine and spirits industry.

If you have the opportunity to intern or work for Gallo, consider it a great opportunity! They are an amazing company who takes care of their employees like family.

What I liked

I was given hands on experience of what it would be like to work in a sourcing role. Also, I was given a project with meaningful results and that Gallo planned on using in the future.

What I wish was different

I wish that the location would have been different and that there were other interns working in my branch.

Advice

Ask Questions and set up as many meet and greets as possible. I set up a ton of these and was really able to understand how Gallo operates.

Work hard academically in your early college years, from there, join as many clubs/organizations as you can and try to attain leadership roles. Employers care more about your experiences and leadership abilities more so than your GPA.

Technical Intern

What I liked

The Cellar group was extremely welcoming and supportive, particularly my manager. He is the first boss I've had that really went to bat for his employees when other departments were giving us interns a hard time. Additionally, the work was challenging (physically, mentally, etc.), involved the operation of some pretty cool and advanced technology, and allowed exposure to multiple teams within the Modesto Cellar. The impact of my project on the business was substantial and observable. Lastly, the massive discounts in the Wine Shop for employees were not unwelcome.

What I wish was different

Beyond the initial welcome tour, I did not have many opportunities to interface with other employees and interns at Gallo outside of the Cellar. As I am not a native of the California Central Valley, this made the relocation there a little bit rough.

Advice

Always carry a notepad and pen with you. Ask questions of everyone, and try to get an understanding of the bigger picture of the business. Be open to taking on any kind of tasks; you never know what you might learn from them. Lastly, it is just as important to foster relationships with your office colleagues as it is with the shift workers on the tank farm, as you never know who may be able to help you in the future.

Industrial Engineering Intern

What I liked

Everyone at Gallo was extremely friendly and helpful! I got to be involved in many large scale capital projects and complete smaller personal projects as well. All of the things I have learned in class became very applicable and the experience I gained was invaluable!

What I wish was different

The location of the internship was not ideal but the experience more than made up for it!

Advice

Don't be wary of 6 month internships! It may seem like a long time but the experience is definitely worth the time commitment. The longer time frame allows you to become more complicated and interesting projects.
