American Express

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Sunrise, FL

What I liked

The company had a great atmosphere and I found that their internship experience for the Tech Programs was helpful in developing and learning about software development at a Fortune 100 company.

What I wish was different

I wish that the Human Resources department was more effective in relaying information to the interns. Many did not have an idea of what the status of their offer was or how they were going to be relayed the information until the very end of the internship. Also, after leaving the company, there has not been a positive sense of contact with the HR department aside from the offer letter.

Advice

I would advise to be very close and not be afraid to ask questions regarding the offer or the status of your job with your leader. They are all very understanding and if they express that they want you back, they will do everything in their power to do so.

Cloud Automation Intern

June - August 2019 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

Good experience working on a software development team using AGILE practices and meeting bi-monthly deadlines. Fun events and networking with people within the company and with other interns. Got some spending money for the school year while I was at it.

What I wish was different

North Phoenix can be boring...

Advice

Definitely do an internship (two is better if possible). Not only do you learn a lot about what real work situations are like, but you position yourself for future opportunities and help you on your path to where you want to end up.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked everything in my internship. I learned a lot about the software engineering in real world and I also made lots of valuable connections. The company is really big so there is plenty of room for opportunities and growing network. Besides that, I became friends with people from various schools like Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, or NYU.

What I wish was different

Everything was perfect. I was also lucky to get managers who were eager to invest their time in teaching me.

Advice

I would strongly recommend to start looking for internships as early as possible - high school or freshman year of college. It is very valuable and fun experience.

Digital Product Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Incredible work culture, including lots of events, coffee chats, great hours (9-5), and lots of resources. Also, the work was very meaningful. Each intern was ingrained into a team and given a meaningful project to work on throughout the 10 weeks.

What I wish was different

There is not much that I would change if I could.

Advice

Make sure to meet as many of people as you can and take advantage of the coffee chat culture. Being an intern an Amex puts you in an incredible position with lots of resources. Summer Intern

June - July 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I received this position through the Public Policy Society at Villanova University. Alumni in the society who live in the DC area will post internships at their work for Villanova students to apply to. I was able to meet Mr. Loper, who runs the American Express Government Affairs office, at Villanova on the Hill a few months prior. I am a Political Science major interested in business. I very much enjoyed learning about American Express as a company, and seeing the intersection between Amex's company goals and policy priorities. I loved working in the office as everyone was friendly. I learn a lot about what it means to be an intern in an office. Living in DC was also a great experience as it is a vibrant city.

What I wish was different

I wish I had known going in how much "busy work" is actually a part of being an intern. The hours can be long and tedious but the work IS valuable. Additionally, in this position I was the only intern. It can be very lonely to work alone, and I had a hard time meeting people within my GWU housing.

Advice

Work as hard as you can. Ask as many questions as you need. ALWAYS ask office members if you can help them. Be friendly.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

Current employees were very helpful and patient. Limited knowledge is expected because they want to help you learn more and grow. You were able to work with people not on the same professional level as you and work with them on your own or other projects.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

I was lucky to be put with such great team members, but I knew some other interns that weren't as lucky. However, if you talk with the recruiters about putting you on a different team, they are very accommodating and there is no bad blood with other teams.

Software Engineer

May 2023 • Sunrise, FL

What I liked

I really liked the company culture, the individuals around me, the community around me, as well as the actual office. I felt very welcomed and was eager to work my hardest with those around me. I loved learning from professionals and establishing new relationships.

What I wish was different

Since this was more of a micro-internship (3 weeks long), we didn't get to do as much as we wanted, but we still learned a lot for such a short amount of time.

Advice

It's ok not to know things. The important thing is that you are passionately curious and always willing to learn new things daily. There are going to be many people around you who are willing to help, so don't be afraid and stay positive.
