
Sr Archives & Digital Asset Preservation Intern
The Sr Archives & Digital Asset Preservation Intern is a graduate student program that will work alongside Archives and Digital Asset Preservation (ADAP) staff to process MBTA records. The ADAP team is in the Document Management (DM) group of the Office of Quality, Compliance, and Oversight. The DM’s overarching objective is to implement systems and standards that enhance quality of information, guaranteeing integrity and accessibility, for the lifecycle of the records. This is accomplished by applying document control, records / information management, and archival best practices.
In this role, the intern will assist the DM team in organizing, maintaining, and improving archival management through archival processing. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in archives management, working with a team of archival professionals, while supporting one of the largest and oldest transit systems in the nation. It provides experience in applying archival best practices related to arrangement, rehousing, description, and labeling. It will also adhere to DACS and MODS standards of record processing and inventory to increase access to critical and historic MBTA records.
The most qualified (or ideal) candidates would be enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Library and Information Science, at least one year of experience in archives, and above-average skills in information organization and project management. We are looking to hire two (2) interns, who will each work 2.5 days in-office (20 hours per week) for four (4) months.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct physical preservation activities, including cleaning and removing fasteners.
- Rehouse and label records in archival folders and boxes.
- Analyze records to determine need for potential conservation.
- Develop detailed records inventory.
- Evaluate records in preparation of digitization.
- Participate in team / staff meetings, organization events, fieldwork, project teams, or other duties as needed.
- Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Education
- Enrolled / matriculated, for entire duration of employment, in a graduate degree program of an accredited college / university with concentrations in Library and Information Science and / or Archives Management.
Minimum Experience and Required Skills
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required (this internship is for graduate students only).
- Interest in public service, government archives, or public transportation and how it operates.
- Experience working responsibly with sensitive items, systems, or data.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, specifically Excel and Word.
- Desire to learn about or deepen experience with archives and digital asset preservation in a transit authority and state records.
- Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form.
- Ability to work independently and juggle multiple priorities.
- Highly organized, motivated, and have great attention-to-detail.
- Ability to independently commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
