Engineering Services, Materials Testing Lab Section- Student Intern

The Department of Public Works is responsible for delivering capital improvement projects for a wide variety of City facilities and infrastructure, maintaining City facilities and fleet assets, facilitating, and regulating development activities, and providing animal care and services. Position Duties

Duration of Assignment:
Approximately 2 years from the intern's onboarding date.

 

Salary Information:
The Public Works Department is currently seeking to fill one (2) part-time unbenefited Undergraduate/Graduate Student Intern in the Engineering Services Division, Materials Testing Lab Section.

Salary ranges for this classification are:

Undergraduate Student Intern: $15.17 - $21.66 per hour (unbenefited)

Graduate Student Intern: $19.62 – 28.98 per hour (unbenefited)

These salary ranges include an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

 

About the  Engineering Services Division, Materials Testing Lab Internship:

Assist Inspectors in testing of construction materials at project sites and in a laboratory setting. Sample and test materials such as asphalt, soils, and concrete. 

Enter data into spreadsheets and compile test reports. 

Physical work requiring carrying, lifting, shoveling construction materials such as soil and hot asphalt.  

 

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate Student Intern: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program.

Graduate Student Intern: Completion of a bachelor’s degree and current enrollment in a master’s degree program from an accredited college or university.

Licenses & Certificates: Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California may be required for some positions.

Selection Process

The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's training and experience based on the application and responses to all the job specific questions. You must answer all questions to be considered or your application may be deemed incomplete and withheld from further consideration. Only those candidates whose backgrounds best match the position will be invited to proceed in the selection process. Additional phases of the selection process will consist of one or more interviews.
