Assistant Primate Keeper

About the Sanctuary:

Peaceable Primate Sanctuary in Winamac, Indiana is actively looking for a motivated, hardworking individual to join our animal care team. Peaceable Primate Sanctuary is an 80-acre facility dedicated to providing enriching retirement for primates from the pet, entertainment, and research industry. With the first baboons arriving here in 2016, the sanctuary now houses over 150 primates (baboons, macaques, and lemurs) and other animals such as genets, goats, and peafowl. The animal care staff is responsible for day-to-day husbandry of these animals as well as assisting veterinary staff with medical care, educating the public through private tours, maintaining animal enclosures and sanctuary grounds, preparing diets for the primates, and more.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Monitor health, behavior, and general welfare of the primates and communicate observations to veterinary staff and supervisory team. 
  • Maintain animal enclosures and holding areas through efficient sanitization, general maintenance, and daily safety checks 
  • Assist veterinary staff with basic medical procedures, medication administration, and more
  • Prepare and distribute approved diets to the primates 
  • Provide approved enrichment to the animals at least twice per day 
  • Assist with the training and oversight of unpaid sanctuary personnel such as interns and volunteers.
  • Educate the public on proper husbandry and retirement of primates through private tours and fundraising events.
  • Assist with operant conditioning to maintain established behaviors with primates to voluntarily participate in husbandry and veterinary care.
  • Maintain support areas in accordance to USDA and supervisor standards through daily cleaning, inventory, basic maintenance, etc. 
  • Maintain sanctuary grounds through basic landscaping, gardening, and maintenance. 
  • Complete any additional tasks as assigned by management and lead animal keepers. 

 

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma/GED is required 
  • Minimum 1-year experience with animals is preferred
  • Ability to work well in a small team environment
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays 
  • Proof of negative TB test required (completed within 14 days of hiring)
