Who should apply for the UW Tacoma IT PDF Remediation Tech position?
We are looking for a person who can help Information Technology support campus with our PDF remediation; someone who can work well with our team, is a good communicator and is reliable. In short, the IT team needs a UW Tacoma student who can be focused on repetitive tasks, work independently, and would enjoy working in the IT environment, and most importantly, understands the importance of accessibility for online content.
About the IT PDF Remediation Tech position
All applicants must be a current, UW Tacoma students.
We will receive PDFs from faculty or other campus users and place them on our Share Drive. The Remediation Tech will pull those files, run them through a series of steps that utilizes multiple software, provide a manual pass over the doc to add missing tags, restructure the reading order, add descriptive, alternative text “alt text,” and notify the team when the completed files have been completed for faculty pick up.
This position may also be involved with captions for campus videos.
It is an on-campus position with a dedicated PC/desk in the Computer Services/IT suite.

Duties and Responsibilities
Assist the department with the process of remediating documents to make them ADA compliant for online use, which will most commonly include:
- Using Adobe Acrobat to determine current state of a document and apply appropriate remediation.
- Using the PAC 2021 accessibility checker to identify if the document meets the PDF/UA or WCAG standards.
- Using a third tool, ABBYY FineReader PDF.
- You will receive a batch of documents to remediate.
- On occasion, a short notice batch will arise and the ability to prioritize, communicate and move the work forward will be necessary.
Preferred Requirements
Competitive candidates will have experience with a PC and Windows OS.
- Basic understanding of html is helpful, because pdf remediation uses the same syntax (creating/organizing accessibility access) that html uses to define page elements.
- Possess working knowledge of other often used programs in the Microsoft Office platform and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Attention to detail is important, because users of assistive technology depend on accurate, compliant documents.
Educational Benefits
Student staff members will work with the Manager of Media Services and the IT Administrative Assistant, as well as other IT team members, to sharpen their own skill set.
Training – both individualized and on the job – will be provided.
