Materials Research Intern
Position Overview:
FLO Materials is seeking a part-time materials and plastics scientist intern with a focus on product-oriented research to join our growing R&D team. As an intern, you will work with the senior engineer for experimental process design and implementation for new materials. This involves design and conducting bench-scale experiments, performing detailed analysis of results, and converting R&D to productization. We value creativity and teamwork. This position will assist the senior engineer to:
- Develop, process and test materials used to create advanced next-gen polymers
- Design and execute experiments to synthesize, optimize and characterize material properties of a new polymer platform
- Research additive and plastics formulations
- Characterize material performance including thermal, mechanical, optical, rheological properties
- Conduct recycling experiments
- Analyze and compare virgin and recycled materials
- Summarize and report on findings
Background & Experience
- Pursuing BS/MS or 2+ years of industry experience in scientific disciplines such as chemistry, materials science, chemical or process engineering, or related fields
- Strong synthetic skills and a solid knowledge of modern polymer synthesis techniques, with preference for those with hands-on experience with synthesis, purification, characterization.
- Familiarity with material characterization equipment (NMR, DSC, DMA, TGA, GPC, etc.), common ASTM testing methods, and rapid prototyping and design software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.)
- Wet chemistry lab experience in organic chemistry and/or polymer characterization
