Children’s Ministry Intern (Connexion Intern – Kids for Community)*
Dixboro United Methodist Church | Internship Opportunity
Location: 5221 Church Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48105 Dixboro, MI
Duration: Mid-May – August
Hours: 10–30 hrs/week

Job Overview
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Intern to join our team. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a supportive environment while contributing to meaningful projects. The ideal candidate will be passionate about making a difference and eager to learn from experienced professionals in the field.

Purpose:
The Children’s Ministry Intern will serve as a relational and creative leader within Dixboro UMC’s Kids for Community program. This internship offers a hands-on ministry opportunity to build connections with children and their families, create meaningful programming, and foster community within and beyond the weekly Friday Farmers’ Market gatherings.

Responsibilities:

Community Engagement & Event Facilitation:

  • Partner with the Director of Children and Youth to develop interactive, inclusive programming for children and families.
  • Lead weekly Kids for Community events during the Farmers’ Market, including crafts, service projects, and games.
  • Build intentional relationships with children and parents to nurture a sense of community.
  • Explore and implement additional family engagement activities (e.g., Parents' Night Out, group play dates, movie nights).

Outreach & Connection Building:

  • Identify and establish systems for staying in touch with participant families.
  • Discover the interests and needs of the Kids for Community group and create responsive programming.
  • Initiate group gatherings outside of Farmers’ Market time, with a goal to form a sustainable rhythm of connection.

Church & Community Integration:

  • Assist with church-based events and special community partnerships (e.g., Superior Township Parks and Rec).
  • Support summer programming like Dixboro Summer Days (1:30–4:30pm on 5/24, 6/21, 7/19, 8/30).
  • Explore opportunities to participate in Sunday morning children’s worship experiences.

Administrative & Team Collaboration:

  • Participate in weekly Zoom check-ins with Connexion Intern mentors.
  • Work in collaboration with church leadership to reflect on and enhance the intern experience.

Qualifications:

  • A growing faith in God and a heart for children and families.
  • Experience working with children and/or youth preferred.
  • Creativity, curiosity, and enthusiasm for ministry and community-building.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ages 19–28.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Flexibility for occasional evening or weekend events.

Additional Requirements:

  • Participate in Connexion Internship Program* (more info below)
  • Willingness to undergo Safe Sanctuary training (if not already certified).
  • Three references: a local church pastor, a professor or work supervisor, and one additional character reference (non-relative).

Schedule Overview:

  • Leadership development training (May 19-22, 2025) in Lansing. 
  • Fridays, 2–7pm (Farmers’ Market events)
  • Sundays, 9am–12pm (optional for church programming involvement)
  • Select Saturdays, 1:30–4:30pm (Dixboro Summer Days)
  • Additional flexible hours for events and outings

Job Types: Part-time, Internship

Pay: $15.00 per hour

Expected hours: 10 – 30 per week

Connexion Intern Program Information

This position is part of the “Connexion Intern Program” which is an eight week summer young adult (ages post H.S. 18 - 28) intern program, in collaboration with the MI Conference UMC, local UM congregations, and UM related non-profits, for the purpose of 

  •  - connecting young adults to communities through service & justice
  •  - meaningful peer relationships
  •  - mentoring, resourcing and supervision
  •  - leadership development

 

$15 an hour, 10 - 30 hours weekly

Connexion Intern Applicants should;

  •  - have a desire to serve in collaboration with a local church, UM related non-profit, campus ministry or camp
  •  - able to attend a leadership development training (May 19-22, 2025) in Lansing. 
  •  - willing to commit to a weekly zoom with other interns for peer resourcing and reflection
  •  - willing to attend a program end one day wrap up event (Aug date to be determined)
  •  - interested in learning more about self and how to grow in leadership


 

Purpose of the Connexion Intern for Dixboro UMC’s Kids for Community

The Connexion Intern collaborates with the Dixboro United Methodist staff and congregation members to enhance the Kids for Community program and incorporate youthful energy with the children and parental units who participate. The Connextion Intern also collaborates to create opportunities for children and parental units to connect with each other beyond the Friday Farmers’ Market and Kids for Community time, such as parents night out, group play dates, and outings to local area attractions and in-person service projects as well as activities on the grounds of the church and/or Village Green such as movie nights in the church facility or in partnership with Superior Township Parks and Recreation. The Connexion Intern interacts and builds relationships with the children and their parental units in order to establish a community with those participating in Kids for Community and offers them the love of God in genuine and authentic relationship opportunities. 

 

Connexion Intern duties and responsibilities

  • To work with the Director of Children and Youth and collaborate creatively to establish the community as stated in the purpose.

      • To create
        • Crafts
        • Service projects
        • Games
      • To converse and connect with
        • Children
        • Parental units
      • To discover
        • Ways parental units feel comfortable connecting beyond the weekly Farmers’ Market
        • A system to acquire contact information for those participating for further opportunities and connections
        • The dynamic of the organic community that forms during the Farmers’ Market in order to capitalize on this in further activities.
        • The needs of this community and how DUMC may better connect and care for them.
        • New ways to communicate information about the Kids for
        • Community programs, i.e. signs, banners, flyers, etc.
    • Beyond the Farmers’ Market
      • In the first two weeks to a month,
        • Establish trusted relationships with KforC participants
      • In the following weeks,
        • Create opportunities for this group to gather outside of the Farmers’ Market
          • Listen to the group dynamic to understand how frequently the group prefers to get together for activities beyond Farmers' Market opportunities.
        • If possible, establish a rhythm for the beyond activities and, perhaps as trust grows, create an opportunity for the group to attend a Sunday morning worship service at Dixboro UMC
        • Coordinate with the Director of Children and Youth to participate in Dixboro Summer Days with the Kids for Community tent and activities from 1:30-4:30 pm 5/24, 6/21, 7/19, and 8/30.
    • Plan weekly check-in via Zoom with Connexion Intern trainers
    • Explore possible opportunities to integrate yourself and your gifts and talents into Sunday morning children and worship programming.

 

Required Qualifications

A growing faith in God and a love for all of God’s children with a mindfulness towards the inclusion of all. Experience working with children and youth and a creative and curious mind are a plus. An eagerness to explore this area of ministry and community mobilization strategies. Those with an education major, community mobilization experience, and a love for the outdoors will thrive in this internship.
