What's Power-to-X?

Power-to-X refers to a suite of technologies that convert renewable electricity, primarily from wind and solar into green hydrogen, which serves as a foundational energy carrier.

This hydrogen can be used directly or further refined into e-fuels such as e-methanol,        e-ammonia, and e-kerosene. As a core element of sector coupling, Power-to-X supports the integration of variable renewables by enabling long-term energy storage and cross-sectoral use. It plays a pivotal role in decarbonising hard-to-electrify sectors like industry, shipping, and aviation, while enhancing energy system flexibility, resilience, and climate neutrality.

Join Us

Denmark stands at the forefront of Power-to-X research, driven by strong political commitment, abundant renewable energy resources, and a deeply integrated research ecosystem. Leading universities, national laboratories, and industrial partners collaborate on cutting-edge projects across:

  • Green hydrogen production through advanced electrolysis (PEM, SOEC)
  • E-fuels and green ammonia for decarbonising shipping, aviation, and agriculture
  • Thermal integration, utilizing excess heat from electrolysis in district heating networks
  • Hydrogen infrastructure research, including storage, compression, and transnational pipeline systems
  • Carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) for circular synthetic fuel production
  • Electrolysis scale-up, performance modelling, and systems integration
  • Sector coupling, enabling synergies between electricity, heat, transport, and industry

With access to demonstration-scale facilities, funding from national and EU frameworks, and a strong culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, Denmark provides an exceptional environment for researchers seeking to advance the global green fuel transition.
