POSITION INFORMATION
Title: Hemingway in Idaho Research Fellow
Type: part-time, non-exempt, seasonal position
Location: Ketchum, Idaho
Reports to: Mary Tyson, director of the Center for Regional History
Compensation: $600/week, minimum 4 weeks ($2,400), maximum 10 weeks ($6,000).
Benefits: none
Special Instructions: successful candidates must be able to complete a criminal background check.
 

THE COMMUNITY LIBRARY ASSOCIATION
The Community Library’s mission is to bring information, ideas, and individuals together to
enhance the cultural life of the community. The Community Library Association (CLA) is a non-profit cultural and educational institution supported in part by revenue from the Gold Mine Thrift and Consign Stores, and in part by private donations. As a privately-funded public institution, the Library provides broad access to a wide range of resources and services. Anyone can get a library card here for free! The Library includes robust physical and digital book collections, a vibrant slate of educational programs for all ages, computer and internet access, and the Center for Regional History, which includes the Wood River Museum of History and Culture and the historic Ernest and Mary Hemingway House and Preserve.
 

JOB SUMMARY
The Community Library Center for Regional History welcomes applications from current
graduate students in the humanities, literature, museum studies, library and information
studies, preservation, or a related program for its professional fellowship program. The
program has been designed to provide practical experience to graduate students interested in pursuing a career in a special collections and cultural heritage setting.
The fellow will contribute to the current interpretive and preservation work. The fellow will
have a unique learning opportunity through the setting and history of the Hemingway House as a cultural heritage landmark. The fellow’s work will contribute to the story of Hemingway in Idaho.
 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
There are broad areas of focus for the Hemingway in Idaho Research Fellowship. Please
consider the descriptions below and focus your application on one or propose a different
project. The following are two current Center projects.

Mary and Ernest’s Cooking and Dining History in Idaho
Working in collaboration with the Center for Regional History Director, library and museum
staff, the Research fellow will:
• Conduct in-depth original research on a set of objects or theme in the Hemingway
House collection, an aspect of the house historic structure, or a theme related to
Hemingway’s time in Idaho expressed by the House and/or the House collection.
• Through research and storytelling, study Mary and Ernest’s kitchen activities tie to their
overall domestic life and social connections. This will include Cuba, Spain, and other trips
including the Mayo clinic.
• Give informal talks to small groups about your project.
OR
A Moveable Feast: Hemingway’s State of Mind from approximately 1957-1961
Working in collaboration with the Center for Regional History Director, library, an museum
staff, the Research fellow will further the following project:
• Develop the 2025 Hemingway Seminar exhibit. This year’s Seminar focus is A Moveable
Feast.
• Research places where Hemingway wrote A Moveable Feast starting in 1957.
His working title was “The Paris Sketches.”
• Collect and contribute data (provenance and description) to the existing databases.
• Give informal talks to small groups about your project.
 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical requirements and working conditions will depend on the project selected. The
project can be designed to provide reasonable accommodations for disabilities.
 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Applicants must be current graduate students in good standing in a humanities,
literature, public history, information studies, preservation, archives, museum, library studies, or related program.
• Demonstrated interest in Hemingway in Idaho or American Studies.
• Applicants must commit to a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 10 weeks of employment during Summer 2025.
• The successful applicant will have a demonstrated ability to foster an atmosphere of diversity and inclusion consistent with the library’s aims.
• Bilingual skills in English and Spanish preferred but not required.
