Job Title: Graphic Designer

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Hours: Full-time (typically Monday - Friday from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM)

Pay Rate: Starts at $21.96/hour

About the role:

We are seeking a Graphic Designer that can move quickly in a fast-paced environment with an emphasis on interpretive graphic design. The Graphic Designer will design, install, maintain and archive all graphic design products produced by the department. The ideal candidate will be able to communicate the Zoo’s mission through original, creative and imaginative interpretive design, while working collaboratively with all departments and stakeholders. This position reports directly to the Supervisor of Design & Interpretive Services.

Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

  • Responsible for updating and maintaining educational graphics and informational signage in assigned areas of the Zoo.
  • Fulfilling basic graphic needs for revenue and non-revenue generating departments within the Zoo including, but not limited to, Education, Marketing, Facilities, etc. This is completed by following through on projects from conceptualization to production including, but not limited to: working with the Supervisor of Design & Interpretive Services to determine scope of project, developing sample layouts for approval, interfacing with outside vendors, presenting samples for approval, and preparing final layout for production.
  • Ensure signage quality throughout the Zoo is up to the standards and address any concerns/needs.
  • Printing, production, and installation of signage needs through both in-house printing and outsourcing.
  • Manages multiple projects within design specifications and budget restrictions.
  • Interacts and collaborates effectively with internal and external team members to assure creative needs of the company are met.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in Graphic Arts or Design.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • Minimum of 1 year of design experience in a professional setting with required knowledge of prepress preparation.
  • Ability to multitask, exhibit good judgment, enhance the interpretive graphics experience for the guest, and maintain a positive experience for all.
  • Personnel Management: promoting and stimulating competent work force to make their fullest contribution to the department.
  • Deadline Oriented: Must work well under pressure with a commitment to high standards and excellence.
  • Adaptable: Capable of adjusting to changing priorities and solving unstructured problems with little to no supervision.
  • Team Player: Strong ability establish collaborative relationships with peers, managers and directors. Ability to work independently and as a member of the team.
  • Multimedia: Experience in a variety of art media and photography.
  • Technology/Software: Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Flash (digital/web-based software), Microsoft Office software and other necessary graphic programs in Mac and PC platforms.
  • Willingness to be flexible with constantly changing standards and expectations.

Candidates might be required to pass a pre-employment background check, drug test, negative TB test, and possess a valid driver’s license with a good history.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

  • Will sometimes work extended/odd hours including weekends, holidays and some night programs.
  • Although the primary duties of this job are indoor in a normal office environment, the employee will be exposed occasionally to the outdoors, potentially adverse, weather conditions.
  • Must be able to walk long distances across the Zoo.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to stand, kneel, bend, twist, reach above head and climb.
  • Will lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds using safe and proper lifting methods.
