Summer Human Services Research Intern
The Minnesota Association of County Social Service Administrators (MACSSA), an affiliate of the Association of Minnesota Counties (AMC), is seeking a current or prospective graduate level intern to support MACSSA during the summer of 2025. The paid internship will consist of researching an emerging human services issue as well as supporting MACSSA’s ongoing work with members across the state. MACSSA will work with the intern to identify a main project and agree upon learning goals and opportunities. Interns will be located at the Association of Minnesota Counties’ building in St. Paul, with a hybrid work option available.
Intern Responsibilities:
- In consultation with MACSSA staff, intern will research, compile materials, prepare findings, and present to membership on an emerging human services issue
- Support the policy setting process within MACSSA
- Attend relevant meetings with counties, the Department of Human Services (DHS), the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF), Direct Care and Treatment (DCT), and other partners and take notes to inform larger discussions
- Assist MACSSA staff on member projects/requests
- Prepare for and actively participate in county visits
Professional Opportunities:
- Observe the internal MACSSA policy setting process
- Exposure to human service policy in a state supervised, county administered system
- Attend meetings with DHS, DCYF, DCT, counties and other policy-making groups
- Travel within the state and network with county human services leaders
- Develop expertise in a specific emerging human services issue area
Qualifications:
- Current student/recent graduate of a master’s program or entering a master’s program in fall 2025 in Public Policy, Public Administration, Public Health, Urban Studies, or a related field
- Interest in county administered human services, including policy making and legislative strategy
- Proficiency in web-based applications such as Zoom, Teams, Google Suite, Microsoft Office
- Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills; comfortable making calls and initiating communication
- Ability to prioritize tasks and projects based on priority and manage deadlines.
Compensation: $18/hour for 400 hours over the summer.
