Ceramic Studio Technician
The Ceramic Studio Technician is responsible for managing operation and maintenance of the Ceramics studios and equipment. Additionally, the Studio technician serves as a resource to other technical and facilities staff, teaching artists, education staff, Woodkiln Technician and students regarding use of the ceramic equipment and facilities.
About the Organization: As Maryland's only 501(c)3 non-profit cultural organization dedicated to the ceramic arts, Baltimore Clayworks provides essential programs and services to local, national and international artists, both from its campus in northwest Baltimore and in the community sites throughout the metropolitan area. Currently it operates four essential program areas: education, exhibitions, community arts and artist residency program. Clayworks' stated core values are artist-centeredness, inclusivity, excellence, integrity and joy. Clayworks' mission is to develop, promote and sustain an artist-centered community, which provides exceptional artistic, educational and collaborative programs in the ceramic art.
Reporting: Reports to Executive Director
Essential Functions:
- Overseeing maintenance and upkeep of Baltimore Clayworks kilns, studio and other equipment
- Complies with and enforces facility access policies and procedures.
- Initiates firing of all student work
- Coordinates a kiln-firing schedule
- Trains students in the safe and proper firing of gas and electric kilns
- Schedules maintenance and ensure proper clean-up of the ceramics studio
- Maintains inventories of instructional supplies and equipment, orders supplies as necessary and appropriate
- Acts as a positive role model in the safe handling of materials and equipment
- Assumes responsibility for the understanding of, and adherence to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety and health standards
- Supervising multi-disciplinary teams of staff including maintenance, grounds and custodial workers
Other
Assist with exhibition openings and events; assist with implementing workshops and volunteer recruitment for studio clean-up and open studio, maintain inventory of tools and clay for re-sale; other duties as assigned.
Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with diverse groups including teachers and students.
Salary and Benefits
This is a permanent, full-time salaried exempt position. Salary is commensurate with experience. Health insurance is provided, along with a 403(b) plan, PTO time and other benefits.
Qualifications
The ideal person for this position holds a Masters in Fine Arts or equivalent years of studio experience with 3 years of firing experience related to but not limited to gas reduction, soda fire, Raku, and electric kiln operations. Candidates should be outgoing, motivated and people oriented. Additionally, must have a willingness to work a varied but flexible schedule. The work environment requires exposure to clay chemicals regularly. Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry 50lbs regularly.
