Trees New York: Internship, Environmental Educator

March 16th through November 30, 2025

Organization: Trees New York is an environmental, urban forestry nonprofit organization. Our mission is to plant, preserve and protect New York City’s urban forest through education, community participation and advocacy. Trees New York uses trees as a vehicle for environmental education and action. Through tree- related endeavors, our volunteers help improve their quality of life while learning about the urban environment and important related topics such as stormwater management, the urban heat island effect and pollinators. 

Internship, Environmental Educator

This 5-month internship will introduce participants to urban forestry and environmental education. The interns will assist with Trees New York’s Citizen Pruner Course, Street Tree Stewardship projects, Community Engagement and Education.  Additionally, the interns will lead the 7-week Young Urban Forester internship for high school students. The internship introduces participants to urban forestry conservation, restoration, planning and management. Interns will assist with tree stewardship and pruning projects, tree inventory and data collection. Additional topics include urban agriculture, green infrastructure, air and water quality. Tree stewardship activities include - removing litter and weeds from the tree beds, cultivating the soil, watering, mulching and pruning.

Responsibilities

Implement tree stewardship and maintenance projects, engage volunteers, and provide instruction on how to care for trees. 

Assist in the instruction of urban forestry topics to 15 high school students under the direction of the Director of Education and Program Manager for 7-weeks from July through August 

Track project progress, hours and administrate paperwork

Serve as support personnel for special projects

Other general office and clerical duties as needed

Qualifications

Experience working with youth preferred

Working towards a degree in Biology, Environmental Studies, Urban Studies, Urban Planning, Geography or Education

MUST ENJOY WORKING OUTDOORS

Schedule

March 16th though July 3, 2025 (~ 20 hours/week)

July 10, 2023 - August 21, 2023 (~ 36 hours/week)

August 25, 2025 – November 21, 2025 (~ 20 hours/week)

Salary: $20.00/hour and stipend for transportation.
