Externship Program
At Central San, we take pride in our work in the wastewater industry. To share careers in the water sector – including our upcoming job opportunities, we host an annual Externship Program for students and recent graduates from schools all over the country. Our cohort-style learning experience is designed as an insider look at multiple career paths in local government and water and an opportunity to make connections, not only with established staff at Central San but also with fellow externs. We will also highlight upcoming positions we’ll be hiring in our internship and summer student programs.
*New in 2025* We are partnering with Contra Costa Water District to showcase the potable water side of our industry with a tour of their Ralph D. Bollman Water Treatment Plant! They will also highlight their upcoming internship opportunities.
The hybrid program is free and convenient. We accept high school students, college students (including vocational schools and postgraduate students), teachers, and recent graduates into the program. You do not need to be able to attend the in-person tours to join the program.
WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?
We will start our 2025 program on Tuesday, March 4 with a half-day on-site tour at our campus (5019 Imhoff Place, Martinez, CA). Remote externs can watch a virtual tour at their leisure. The program continues with a virtual session on Wednesday, March 5 held over Microsoft Teams (externs can join the meetings via any internet browser and don’t need to download any apps or programs). Then, the program concludes with a half-day tour on Thursday, March 6, which will be livestreamed for remote participants, of our local drinking water agency, Contra Costa Water District (2015 Bates Ave, Concord, CA). Lunch will be provided at both in-person tours. The three-day program is designed to showcase a range of jobs in the water/wastewater industry in a way that is flexible for externs’ schedules.
