Lighting/Electrics Intern
PROGRAM INTRODUCTION
Summer Stock Austin (SSA) is a tuition free summer stock program where participants are selected solely on the basis of their demonstrated talent, promise, and character. We have been stunning audiences since 2005, bringing true musical theatre repertory experiences to Austin’s summertime entertainment scene.
Every year SSA brings together a vibrant mix of high school performers, college students, and seasoned professionals from across the nation, redefining expectations and setting the standards for excellence in theatrical productions that showcase the immense potential of our youth.
As the only program of its kind, SSA provides a level playing field for talented young artists emphasizing inclusivity and access to high-quality arts education. With hands-on training in performance, production, marketing, and fundraising, SSA prepares participants for success in the arts and beyond, nurturing future leaders and advocates for the arts community. Through the interview and selection process we create unique internship paths that best fit the applicants desired learning areas and our organization’s needs. We are looking for folks with experience in theatre and/or film. Stipends are commensurate with experience and position. Some internships are unpaid and others range from $300-$1000 for an approximate 6-week commitment. Some positions have full or partial remote options.
ELECTRICS
Assist Lighting Designers, Master Electrician, and/or Programmer with creation of complete lighting design for the season. The candidate will have a practical knowledge of electrics and basic understanding of electricity and stagecraft. Many aspects of theatrical lighting will be experienced, including reading and updating light plots and the use of VectorWorks and LightWright for paperwork. Participate in load-in, hanging, focusing, troubleshooting problems during tech rehearsals, maintaining electrical equipment during production runs, participating in all lighting strikes and changeovers, and general maintenance of inventory and spaces. Experience working in a theatrical atmosphere, computer literacy, and awareness of current lighting consoles and equipment is ideal. This position is suitable for those working towards careers as Master Electricians and Lighting Designers.
