Program Description

The Expanding Diversity in Economics+ (EDE+) program was established in 2021 by the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics Research (BFI), with the objective of diversifying the pool of students pursuing degrees and careers in economics. The program exposes a diverse group of early undergraduate students to economics, refines their research and technical skills, and offers a clear pathway into a research career from its new location at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. The program continues to concentrate on economics and its rigorous analytical tools and frameworks for addressing complex social challenges. Students interested in economics are welcome to apply, as well as those considering complementary fields in the quantitative social sciences such as business, finance, sociology, political science, and data science.

Summer Institute Description

The 2025 Expanding Diversity in Economics+ (EDE+) Summer Institute is an immersive, nine-week,  summer program based at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business in Chicago, IL. The EDE+ Summer Institute features a combination of in-person and remote programming across from June 2 - July 30, 2025, as follows:

  • Week-long virtual bootcamp (June 2-6, 2025)
  • One week of in-residence programming in Washington, DC, at Brookings (June 7-14, 2025)

  • Six week synchronous, online evening summer course (June 23-July 30, 2025)

Overview

After refining statistical programming and foundational research skills during the virtual bootcamp, participants travel to Washington, DC, for a week of programming where they gain unparalleled access to top experts and institutions shaping economic policy. All program participants then travel to Chicago for a week of programming to develop their small-group research questions and set the stage for an extended, in-depth exploration of their projects during the online summer course.

The online summer course is designed to guide participants through the research process, culminating in a research project and presentation. The summer course's evening sessions last 2 hours per session (typically 6-8 PM CST), which allows for other summer employment or plans. Participants are also invited to present their findings at a research and networking conference in Washington, DC, hosted by PREDOC. Additionally, the program helps participants explore opportunities to gain publishing credit as part of the summer experience.

Participants receive a $2,000 stipend upon successful completion of the program. All travel, housing, meals, and group activities are covered.
