Senior Analytical Chemist

Senior Analytical Chemist - Argonne National Lab, Lemont, IL – 1 Year Project

Our client, Argonne National Laboratory, Applied Material Division (AMD), conducts applied research to develop sustainable innovative technologies to improve efficiency of resources and energy utilization.  This role will provide technical expertise in the following critical areas: prepare samples, characterize & analyze various substances from R&D and scale-up process for production of advanced materials. 

Project Length: 1 year 

Work Location: Lemont, IL 

Full-Time Position (8 hours per day). 

Required occasional overtime.  (Or on the weekend)

Required ID to enter work facility: Unexpired REAL ID OR US Passport / Passport card

 

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct complex, multi-instrument analysis on various materials for electrochemical energy storage, nanomaterials, catalysts and other materials as needed.  Samples must be analyzed in a timely manner and results reported back to allow for process improvements.  (Daily task) 
  • Troubleshoot and conduct routine maintenance of analytical instruments.  Instruments must be calibrated as needed. Schedule manufacturer’s technical support for annual preventative maintenance. Write safety plan for work.
  • Train users for selected instruments.  They must be trained to the correct operation of the instrument and monitored to ensure proper procedures are followed. Keep instrument usage logs.
  • Write and periodically update SOP’s and safety documentation for instrument operation.  The documents will be updated on an annual basis or sooner if new protocols or sample materials are introduced.  To be conducted as needed or annually.

Requirements of the position: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (OR higher education) 
  • Expert level skills: Analytical techniques including ICP-MS, ICP-OES, XRD, TGA/DSC, SEM-EDS, ion beam mill and microwave sample digester
  • 10(+) Years’ experience operating & maintaining modern analytical & materials characterization equipment found in labs conducting research in chemical synthesis. 
  • Good oral and written communication skills. 
  • Basic ability to use Microsoft Office for communications, data analysis and tracking.
