About the Project:

Join an exciting, funded Master’s research project investigating soil microbiological changes in Sierra meadows following Beaver Dam Analog (BDA) restoration. This project is part of a larger collaborative effort with the USDA Forest Service, focusing on restoring degraded meadow ecosystems affected by fire, grazing, and mining. You’ll contribute to understanding the role of soil microbes in meadow recovery and sustainability.

The restoration site includes long-term studies on hydrology and sediment changes, with this project pioneering the microbiological perspective.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct fieldwork in Sierra meadows, collecting soil samples and monitoring environmental conditions.
  • Analyze microbial communities in meadow soils to assess the impact of restoration activities.
  • Collaborate with Forest Service researchers and undergraduate students.
  • Present findings at conferences and contribute to peer-reviewed publications.

Ideal Candidate Background:

We’re looking for passionate individuals from the following fields:

  • Environmental or Civil Engineering
  • Microbiology or Environmental Biology
  • Soil Science

Experience in fieldwork, data analysis, or lab techniques is a plus, but enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are most important.

Why Join?

  • Fully Funded Research: Your tuition and project expenses will be covered through Forest Service funding.
  • Hands-On Experience: Develop expertise in sustainable restoration practices and microbial ecology.
  • Collaborative Environment: Work alongside experts from Cal Poly Humboldt and the Forest Service, gaining professional connections and research experience.
