Provide environmental planning and analysis support for the six counties within DEC Region 9:

  1. Using past and current resources, studies, and reports (e.g. State of the Region report), determine widely accepted environmental indicators and verify what data is available in the region’s six county area.
  2. Verify the status and progress for each identified indicator.
  3. Verify other stakeholders involved, their role, and progress with each indicator.
  4. Identify gaps, next steps, and suggestions for expediting progress of indicators.

Interns will meet regularly with the DEC regional director, the Chair of the UB Department of Urban and Regional Planning, and/or their supervising faculty to review projects.

Student applicants are encouraged to work with faculty from their academic institution to connect their DEC work with their academic coursework and research.  Therefore, applications must be accompanied by a letter of sponsorship from a faculty member in Environmental Planning, Environmental Studies, or a related field at the applicant’s academic institution.

Additionally, a resume and transcripts should accompany each application.

Applicants pursuing degrees in Environmental Planning, Environmental Law, Environmental Studies, or a related field are preferred.

Internship schedule and hours will be set to accommodate academic schedules, which will be further discussed during the interview. On average, it is anticipated that interns will work 10-20 hours per week through March 31st, 2025.
