Gallery Trainee and Artist Assistant

Artist-run gallery on Wells St, near Armitage Ave, in Chicago's Old Town seeks immediate, part-time support. The right candidate(s) will have experience discussing painting, and abstract painting in particular. You must have a strong interest in art, an ease interacting with  all sorts of people, and an interest in learning and growing in this position.

Your primary role will be supporting a painter across multiple aspects of managing her business.  

 

We are seeking candidates who are down to earth, confident and poised, who have an easy way of talking with all sorts of people, and who are interested in developing skills in the art business, including managing a physical space, communications and marketing, and supporting the sales process. Please indicate any experience managing a database. 

 

Tasks related to this position include: 

  • Assist principal in hanging and re-hanging artwork
  • Assist in hands-on gallery tasks related to opening
  • Assist principal in all tasks related to maintaining a gallery space
  • Engage with visitors in conversations about artwork
  • Assist in closing and process sales
  • Research and outreach 
  • Prepare for and assist during events and open hours
  • Turn-key responsibilities, including opening and closing

 

Let us know if you have experience in video editing and social media. We'll ask our hires to attend to studio and gallery business while you are at work and provide tasks for you to complete. This position is open to Co-op students who are at school while living in Chicago, IL and can be paired with additional opportunities at our studio, which is located within a few blocks of the gallery. We are also interested in interns who can commit to 1.5-3 days weekly to learn the business, Dec-June or Jan-June, and May - Sept.

This is a public-facing position that will require some decorum. Please present yourself accordingly for any video and in-person meetings so we can see how you interpret this. Fluency and ease in the English language is critical to this public-facing position. International students who are interested in learning the business and working behind the scenes are also welcome to apply.
