Environmental Data Science Graduate Research Student

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Math, Science & Technology (MST) Department at Oglala Lakota College (OLC) is excited to announce a job opportunity as an Environmental Data Science Graduate Research student. The position is funded by the NIFA TCRGP as part of a grant titled Data Cubed, Resilience Squared: Empowering Local Solutions. This project aims to develop an Integrated Data Cube (IDC) for climate and agricultural resilience. The IDC is a multi-dimensional representation of datasets designed to provide efficient querying and spatial-temporal analysis which will be piloted at OLC and will focus on treaty boundaries of the Oceti Sakowin of the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota tribes. The successful applicant will contribute expertise in advanced data analysis methodologies, system integration strategies, and stakeholder engagement practices. Significant effort and input will be made in identifying and acquiring large datasets for the construction of the IDC, curating assimilated data, application of the IDC for agricultural and climatic analyses, and dissemination of project results through publications resulting from a graduate thesis.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Minimum educational level of a BA or BS in a relevant science and/or engineering field.

2. Must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student in good standing at an accredited 

institution of higher learning in a scientific or engineering major related to environmental 

science.

4. Demonstrated ability to use analytical, geospatial, and communications software.

5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

6. Experience conducting independent research is preferred.

7. Ability to commit to working for 20 hours/week.

8. Strong skills in working with scientific data.

9. Interest in Earth, environment, and data science.

10. Experience with the Python programming language is preferred.


POSITION DUTIES:

  1. Weekly and quarterly reports on project status and progress
  2. Identify and acquire datasets
  3. Document datasets with the appropriate metadata
  4. Perform data analysis and implementation
  5. Contribute to data management workflow
  6. Contribute to developing a data sovereignty framework
  7. Participate in outreach, hackathons, and other grant activities as assigned
  8. Completion and presentation of a final report or publication

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
●This position may be renewed annually for a total of three years.
●The position will open on October 30, 2024.
●The position location and work environment will depend upon where the graduate student is enrolled.
●A student on appointment must demonstrate adequate progress every semester toward her/his degree.
