Activity Communicator

As an Activity Communicator with Edinburgh Science, you will form part of the team delivering the workshops and activities at the Art X Science Family Festival. High quality communication is at the heart of what Edinburgh Science is about and our communicators are our ambassadors. This role makes a real difference to the experience of children, families and adults at the festival. You will facilitate visitor’s experiences, helping with the engagement and understanding of the content using high quality communication skills.

As the Festival only runs for a short time, we depend on our staff being reliable and committed to the role for the four days for which they are employed and willing to engage in all aspects of the visitor experience.

Please note, if successful you will be required to pass a background check for this role.

Interviews and Selection: 
 

· You will be required to submit a 2-minute video and participate in an interview session. This will take place online via Zoom or Teams.

Training and Development: 
Dates:  November 6th & 8th  2024
Venue: La Brea Tar Pits 

· You will be required to attend and participate in 2 training days on communication skills and content-specific training

· You will be expected to study the event delivery materials to familiarize yourself with the content

 

Live Period
Dates:  9 – 11 November 2024
Venue: Hancock Park in La Brea Tar Pits and Museum

· You will be required to be available for all days of the festival – timings TBC (this includes time to assist with set up and pack down).

Pay rate: $25 per hour

MAIN TASKS

· Review and learn an assigned workshop and be prepared to supplement training provided on-site with individual learning to ensure readiness to deliver your event

· Deliver the events as per the event delivery document and follow direction given during training

· Engage and educate children and adults with the event material and facilitate the successful running of your designated area at all times

· Deliver to a continuously high standard

· Answer questions from participants and the public with accuracy and factual responses

· Attend all shifts as designated on the rota in order to deliver your assigned event during the festival

· Attend any briefings required by the festival management team

· Maintain a safe and clean environment around your workshop / event space area

· Represent the high standards of Edinburgh Science at all times

Conduct

· To be an Edinburgh Science ambassador

· To behave as instructed regarding media, press and sponsors

· To be a punctual, reliable and responsible member of the team at all times whilst on site

· To maintain appropriate dress code and personal appearance appropriate to working in the environment

· To use language and behavioral conduct appropriate to working with the public and professional environment

Sets and Props

· To set up and take down all sets and props paying attention to the correct handling and health & safety guidelines, as instructed by the production team

· To perform minor repairs to props as necessary and report any problems or issues with props to the production team

· Be responsible for care of props & maintaining supplies of consumables, including reporting when stocks run low/need replacing in good time

· Safely and tidily pack up all consumables and props ensuring your workshop/event area is stored safely as directed by the festival team

KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, TECHNICAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

We are looking for outgoing, high-energy performers and facilitators who are excellent communicators and enjoy working with people of all ages. A background in theatre or performing arts is highly desirable, and experience working in education would be beneficial. However, passion is key and an ability to work hard and retain your sense of humor is essential.
