Location Details/Description: Moab, Utah.
The position is based in Moab Utah, with the intern working in the BLM office and conducting field work on BLM lands throughout Grand and San Juan Counties including but not limited to the Bears Ears National Monument. Majority of work will be onsite. Telework may be an option on certain days.

Position Overview:
The BLM Canyon County District Office is providing an opportunity for one member to gain hands-on experience in the fields of hydrology, watershed restoration, and environmental policy. The successful candidate will provide valuable support to a long-term water resources inventory and monitoring project in preparation for filling water right claims with the State of Utah. The goal of the project is to inventory water resources in high priority water right adjudication areas including the Mill Creek Watershed, the San Juan Basin and the Hatch Point Area. These are large areas totaling over 500,000 acres and may contain over 300 locations with water resources. Job duties will involve approximately 75% field work and 25% office work, fluctuating based on the field conditions or the season.
Field duties include:
- Collecting field data at springs, streams, water wells and livestock ponds such as water quality measurements, water flow measurements, summary of plant species and noting site conditions.
- Other field data will be collected including site characterization, detailed sketches of the site and any infrastructure (pipelines, troughs, etc), assessment of conditions such as streambank stability and erosion, information on aquatic habitats and organisms (fish and macroinvertebrates), detailed location information (GPS points and access information) and photos.
This field work will often be in remote areas accessed by driving on rugged dirt roads. Initially the intern will work alongside BLM staff and when ready will work on their own. Detailed coordination and planning will be done to ensure safety of the intern. Field equipment will be provided including a BLM radio and an in-reach device and other technical gear.
Office work will include:
- Writing short staff reports
- Conducting data entry
- Working with GIS data to prepare maps.
Other duties may include working with other water related projects and watershed restoration efforts or supporting other BLM resource specialists. There will be opportunities for professional development through technical and non-technical training, cross-program training and working with other BLM specialists including Wildlife Biologists, Riparian Coordinators, Livestock Grazing Specialists, the District Fisheries Biologist, the District Botanist, Fire and Fuels staff and other BLM staff. This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.
Schedule: Mon - Fri: 7am - 4:30pm MST.
Position Benefits
Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $800/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.
Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service and 640 hours of service. If the duration of a PLC-eligible term is not long enough for Members to accrue 640 hours of service (~16 weeks), the total hours served at the completion of the term may be eligible to be combined with hours accrued from another PLC-eligible term to meet the 640 hours requirement. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or the BLM. BLM housing may be available but is not guaranteed.
Housing Assistance: ACE Members will be eligible for reimbursable housing assistance up to $125 per week. The ACE Member will only be reimbursed for approved and demonstrated housing expenses.
Relocation Allowance: ACE members will have access to up to $500 to be used for eligible relocation expenses. Further details regarding distribution of these funds will be provided during the interview process.
Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Specific training may include CPR/First Aid training, Information Management training, Water Quality Sampling Training by UDWQ, and other BLM training as needed.
Qualifications
Required:
- Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts
- Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
- Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
- A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
- Willing to undergo and must pass the required criminal history checks
- ACE participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your Form I-9 information when you are hired to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S.
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

Preferred:
- Exposure or experience with GIS.
- Familiarity with watershed concepts.
Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:
- Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for use of various tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch. Ability to hike over rough terrain, and potentially camp overnight under field conditions.
- Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
- Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently moves up to 25lbs., ability to move up to 50 pounds.
- Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently; working under adverse weather conditions and in various climates.
- Noise Environment: Moderate to high noise such gas-powered chainsaws and other hand and power tools. Moderate noise such as in a business office with equipment and light traffic.

Travel: This position may require domestic travel.
Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. Specifically the ACE member may encounter inclement weather conditions in lower elevation desert ecosystems, rough roads, working solo in remote locations and long drives to access sites. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources.
Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the BLM or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the BLM. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the BLM], will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to BLM and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
