Children’s Research Institute

Children’s Research Institute (CRI) mission addresses fundamental scientific questions related to the biological basis of disease. Through transformative biomedical research, CRI faculty seek breakthroughs that change scientific fields and yield new strategies for treating disease. CRI a highly collaborative environment working on basic and translational biology at the interface of stem cells, cancer, and metabolism. Job Description Children’s Research Institute (CRI) is looking to hire a Flow Cytometry Specialist to join our grant-supported research work with the Moody Foundation. This joint venture with Children’s Research Institute offers state-of-the-art analytic cytometry and high-speed sorting where we use lasers and optics to characterize cells. This highly motivated individual will help operate and maintain the facility's sorters and analyzers, which are utilized on a multi-user basis, for projects in several areas, including stem cell and cancer research.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with flow cytometry applications and will enjoy working in our fast-paced flow cytometry facility providing specialized research within all aspects of flow cytometry, specimen analysis, core facility utilization scheduling, and training. As a Flow Cytometry Specialist, you will have the unique opportunity to support ground-breaking research by interpreting and analyzing results of flow cytometry experiments, cytometer instrument performance reports, and safety studies.

Primary duties include:

  • Performing routine cell sorts on our FACSAria II and FACSAria Fusion Cell Sorters
  • Performing regular QC and maintenance of our FACS Aria II/Fusion Cell Sorters, FACS Canto RUO and LSRFortessa Analyzers
  • Assisting users with self-run data acquisition and computer-based data analysis
  • Working with a diverse group of people in a busy customer service-oriented environment
  • Lab-related sample processing and data analyses
  • Adhering to and enforce proper safety practices and standard operating procedures (SOPs), as well as all general operational policies within the Facility

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor degree in biological or physical sciences
  • 1+ years of flow cytometry experience preferred
  • Must be able to work well with minimal supervision and with researchers, engineers, and institute staff in a service-oriented environment
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Be able to lift 10 lbs above your head

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor's degree required with major coursework in one of major physical sciences or advanced coursework in flow cytometry or cytometry manufacturer training.
  • Three (3) years general lab experience as certified Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist or two (2) years flow cytometry experience required.

Job Duties

  • Processes/tests specimen samples from bone marrow, blood, and various other tissues for analysis and diagnosis of hematopathologic malignancy or immunodeficiency.
  • Counts and measures cells by utilizing Flow Cytometer for optimum specimen data acquisition, analysis, manipulation, validation, and quality control purposes.
  • Utilizes mononuclear cell isolation and monoclonal antibody staining techniques in order to produce optimal specimen to be run on Flow Cyometer for specific cell detection and accurate interpretation.
  • Records and labels specimen samples in log, including each patient\'s name identification number, sex, age, race, brief clinical history, suspected abnormality, specimen type, etc., and makes pre-processed slides.
  • Analyzes and prepares preliminary reports for pathologist consultation.
  • Practices quality control procedures in order to produce accurate and valid results used in patient diagnosis and to ensure compliance with federal and laboratory guidelines.
  • Ensures proper cleaning, calibration, and maintenance of laboratory instruments; trouble-shoots equipment as needed.
  • Conducts independent research or developmental projects with minimum supervision and assists fellows and rotating residents with research projects.
  • Evaluates and implements new and different laboratory procedures, revises methodologies as new developments are found.
  • Provides leadership and technical assistance to Med. Technologists in conducting flow cytometric procedures to ensure accuracy of clinical data.
  • Maintains apprpriate billing and billing record for time used on instruments by those outside flow cytometry lab and/or generates invoices for clients using flow services.
  • Attends continuing education seminars.
  • Maintains knowledge of flow cytometry by reading relevant literature on new advances in field.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
