Explainer - Museum Educator

Job description

The National Air and Space Museum is actively seeking part-time hires for the Explainers Program. As a part of the Smithsonian Institution, we provide world-class museum and educator working experiences.

Explainers are paid student educators who engage visitors with hands-on activity carts and interactive demonstrations on topics such as the forces of flight and humans in orbit.

Explainers are expected to work at least 15 hours per month and hours are flexible according to your academic schedule, with opportunities seven days a week. Explainers can work at the National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall in Washington, DC, or at the Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia.

Requirements: 

• Be at least 16 years of age
• Currently be enrolled in a degree-granting program
• Maintain a 2.7 GPA
• Have good written and verbal communication skills
• Be willing to attend ongoing training and conduct self-study

Explainers from all majors and academic backgrounds will be considered. The most important thing is that you are interested and excited about sharing aviation and space stories and concepts.

• A one to two-page Cover Letter or Statement of Purpose — How can you contribute to the program and how would this job assist you in your career and/or educational goals?
• A current resume
• A high school or college transcript (unofficial transcripts will be accepted)
• Two letters of recommendation

To be an Explainer you must be a United States citizen with a photo ID, a naturalized citizen with proper documentation, or a non-citizen with proper INS authorization to work in the United States
