Reptile Department Keeper

DESCRIPTION:

Out of Africa Wildlife Park is a 204 acre, one of a kind facility that brings people closer to animals and inspires conservation action through play, loving relationships, and natural behaviors.


 

The Reptile Department handles the care and maintenance of many different species of reptiles. We engage with large and small exotic animals, monitoring their health and preparing diets specific to each animal, and maintaining habitats including temperatures and humidity. Safely handling and feeding of all animals in the department. The Reptile Department consists of many different snakes, lizards, tortoises, and even a caiman. We have a daily informational show given to the public using a variety of reptiles while using a microphone. Once fully trained in the department, keepers may be trained to give tours on large vehicles about other animals throughout the park.  We work with the public, answering questions, and ensuring visitors have a great day. We maintain our own habitats doing minor landscaping and some handy work.


Applicants should be in good physical condition. They must be able to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis. They will need to be able to work in extreme conditions (snow, ice, rain, fog, and heat). Applicants should have some knowledge about reptiles as well as be prepared to cross train to other areas of the park. Keepers must also be prepared to drive manual vehicles or will be trained to do so.

 

EDUCATION AND PRE-REQUISITES:

This position requires 1 year of experience in a similar field or a 4 year degree in a biological field. Must be available to work full-time, flexible hours including weekends and holidays.

A valid drivers license is required as the successful applicant will be expected to drive educational tours.

Drug test required.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Hourly rate is between $14.75 - $15.50, plus possible tips from the tours. Starting pay is based on experience. Evaluation with a possibility of a raise after 90 days.

After a 90 day probationary period, you receive holidays and can start using the sick time that has been accrued. After your 1 year anniversary, you gain 5 PTO days to be used within that following year. At your 3rd year anniversary, you gain 10 PTO days.

As of now, there is no health insurance offered through the park.
