Residential Camp Counselor/Marine Educator - WB Surf Camp

The Marine Educator for our overnight Carolina Ocean Odyssey program must be a multi-talented, service oriented individual with a strong desire to provide a life changing ocean experience that encompasses ocean safety and marine science. Applicant must have a passion for ocean conservation, marine science, teaching, and inspiring youth. This position requires the candidate to work as part of a team to instruct and provide care to a group of 16 campers, ages 10-12. Summer duties will be based at our ocean-view facility on Topsail Island, 30 minutes north of Wilmington. Candidates will work closely with our entire leadership team. 

Marine Educator’s will be responsible for daily marine science and water instruction, facilitation of a variety of evening programs, logistical support and daily van driving responsibilities. Logistics are a key element of our overnight camps and include equipment management and maintenance, evening program set-up and break-down, and other duties as assigned. This position will also assist with coordination of arrival and departure of campers. Last but not least, the Marine Educator must ensure that all staff and campers stay safe while having an awesome and life-enriching experience. This position reports to the Unit Leader.

Location: Topsail Island, NC
Responsibilities:

  • Conduct marine science instruction and evening programs
  • Provide logistical support and ensure camper safety
  • Supervise campers 24/7 and implement program curriculum
  • Participate in camp activities and maintain equipment
  • Communicate effectively with campers and parents

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in marine biology, environmental science, education, or related field
  • Experience in marine science or education
  • Certifications in lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid
  • Lifeguard Certification
  • Ability to pass 500-yard open-ocean swim test and lift 50 lbs unassisted
  • Strong desire to inspire youth and promote ocean conservation

Desired Skills:

  • Master's degree in relevant field and wilderness first responder certification
  • Familiarity with local marine ecosystems and previous camp experience
  • Surfing experience and environmental education certification
  • Strong communication, decision-making, and organizational skills

Compensation:

  • $4,000 stipend for summer employment (May 24 - August 3, 2024)
  • Ocean-view accommodation and three daily meals

Position Duration:
Programs run from late May to early August on Topsail Island, NC. Mandatory staff training in early June.
