Thank you for your inquiry concerning the graduate programs in biomedical sciences, psychology and public health at the School of Medicine of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS).  Our campus is adjacent to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) and across the street from the National Institutes of Health. The graduate programs in biomedical sciences, psychology and public health in the USU School of Medicine are open to civilian and military applicants. The graduate programs are committed to excellence in the didactic and research training of masters and doctoral degree students. Our web site will provide insight into the numerous outstanding research training opportunities and the excellent faculty we have to support and challenge students.

 

There are many research opportunities and areas of research interest represented by our faculty members at USUHS.  The research areas include advanced research topics ranging from molecular and cellular neuroscience to medical psychology and psychiatry.  We also have a large group of faculty interested in traumatic brain injury, as well as several conducting research on development and stem cells. We have more than 250 faculty members in our program.  Outstanding research facilities are available to conduct a wide range of studies at the molecular, cellular, and systems levels.  Please email or call if you would like more information about research opportunities in specific areas.

USU is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, and the Medical School is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. The Department of Defense, the USU Board of Regents, the President of USU, and the Dean of the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine, actively support and encourage graduate education in the basic medical sciences at USU.

            

The Department of Defense requires that candidates are U.S. citizens possessing a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university in the US, Canada, or Puerto Rico.  A baccalaureate degree must be obtained from a college, university, or institution located in the United States, Puerto Rico or Canada, and accredited by an accrediting agency or association that is recognized for such purpose by the Secretary of Education. Included within this definition are those institutions that are in the process of seeking accreditation and currently have provisional or conditional accreditation, or candidacy status for accreditation. 

Admission Requirements:

  1. Each applicant must complete a baccalaureate degree program from an accredited academic institution before matriculation at USU.
  2. Complete college transcripts, transcripts of all previous graduate studies.
  3. Resume/CV
  4. Three letters of recommendation from faculty members under whom the applicant has studied. Only the recommenders name, email and telephone number are required at the time of submitting the application.  USU will notify them.
  5. GRE scores are being waived for the academic year.
  6. Additionally, some programs may have established requirements for college courses specific to their area of scientific studies. 
  7. *International Students will be considered if they have earned a baccalaureate degree from a United States College/University. 

There is NO application fee.

USUHS provides an attractive package of financial support that is administered as a federal salary. This support is available on a competitive basis to all civilian Graduate Students.  Civilian students do not incur service obligation to the United States government.  Financial support is made on an annual basis and renewable for up to three years.  For the 2024 academic year, financial support for graduate students is approximately $48,000. Students receive a salary on a part-time rate of approximately $48,000 for 64 hours biweekly.  In addition to this base support, health insurance is available if needed.  Transit benefits are available up to $300 monthly, at no additional cost to you.  Textbooks and laptops are provided to students without charge.
