Ceramics Instructor (Part Time)

Selah Studio is a community ceramics studio in downtown Grand Rapids dedicated to creating a welcoming space where people can slow down, create with intention, and build community through clay. We offer beginner pottery classes, workshops, memberships, and private events, and we are looking for someone who enjoys sharing their passion for ceramics with others.

This position is ideal for an artist or ceramics student who is interested in developing teaching experience while working in a collaborative, creative environment. 

Responsibilities

• Teach 1-2 beginner wheel throwing and/or hand-building classes (training provided) each week. Classes happen 6-8pm on weeknights. 
• Assist with workshops and private events. Workshops and private events take place Fridays 6-8pm and Saturday afternoons 4-6pm and evenings 6-8pm.
• Help prepare clay, glazes, tools, and studio materials
• Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming studio
• Support students of beginner experience levels with patience and encouragement
• Occasionally assist with kiln loading/unloading and general studio operations

Qualifications

• Experience with wheel throwing and basic ceramic techniques. Must feel comfortable explaining how to center, open, and raise walls of a ceramic form. Instructors teach beginner classes.
• Friendly, dependable, and professional
• Comfortable teaching or interested in learning to teach small groups of 5-6 participants
• Strong communication skills
• Able to work 1-2 evenings per week and occasional Saturdays.

Preferred

• Current art student or recent graduate
• Previous teaching, tutoring, or customer service experience
• Experience working in a community studio
