Children's Choir Director

Position Title: Children’s Choir Music Director

Term: early August - early December (18 weeks) | early January – early May (18 weeks)

(36 weeks total)

Compensation: $150 per week (36 weeks total; paid the 15th and last day of the month)

Reports to: Associate Pastor of Music and Worship Arts

Position Summary

The Children’s Choir Music Director provides musical leadership and instruction for the church’s children’s choir. The director prepares children to participate in worship through singing while fostering a joyful, encouraging, and supportive environment for musical and spiritual growth.

The children’s choir typically includes children in grades K–5 and participates in worship approximately five to six times during the school year.

Time Commitment

This position averages approximately 3-4 hours per week, including rehearsal leadership, preparation, communication with families, recruitment, and participation in worship services when the choir sings.

Primary Responsibilities

Musical Leadership

• Plan and lead a weekly children’s choir and handbells rehearsal (60 minutes).

• Select and prepare age-appropriate sacred choral music.

• Teach basic vocal technique, musicianship, and ensemble singing appropriate for children.

• Prepare the choir to sing in worship approximately 5 to 6 times during the school year.

Worship Leadership

• Coordinate and lead brief warm-up rehearsals prior to worship services when the choir sings.

• Direct the choir during worship services.

Preparation

• Prepare rehearsal plans and study music during the week.

• Maintain music folders and distribute music as needed.

Recruitment and Communication

• Help recruit children and encourage participation in the choir.

• Communicate rehearsal and performance schedules with families.Collaboration

• Coordinate with the Associate Pastor of Music and Worship Arts regarding worship planning and scheduling.

• Work alongside volunteer helpers who assist with supervision and logistics and recruitment including the volunteer Children’s Choir Music Coordinator

Qualifications

• Experience directing children’s choirs and/or teaching music

• Strong vocal/choral leadership skills

• Basic keyboard skills preferred

• Love for children and respect for Christian ministry

• Experience with handbell ringing/directing preferred, but not required for an otherwise strong candidate.

• Organizational and communication skills

• Background check required

Schedule

• Weekly rehearsal(s) during school year on Sundays at 4:00 – 5:00

• Sunday worship appearances periodically (5 – 6 times per school year)

• Regularly scheduled meetings with Associate Pastor of Music and Worship Arts and Children’s Choir Coordinator
