Human and Animal Protections Student Assistant/Intern
Human and Animal Protections (HAP) is a unit within the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP).
HAP manages and administratively supports the SFSU Human and Animal Research Programs and Committees. These federally mandated Committees are the:
· Institutional Review Board (IRB); and
· Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
Each committee has specific regulatory requirements and is charged with protecting the safety and welfare of human subjects and animals used for research at or in conjunction with our university.
HAP ensures the committees adhere to respective regulatory requirements, processes research submissions, and conducts pre-review of all human and animal research submissions.

· Strong computer database, email (Outlook), and Microsoft Word skills.
Specific tasks associated with the Student Assistant position supporting HAP include:
· Work location will be following the state, local, and SFSU guidelines. The work location will either be remote or in person, depending on university policies.
· Serving as the front desk person for HAP within ORSP- greeting visitors and answering or referring inquiries to appropriate personnel.
· Answering the HAP phone line and monitoring/corresponding with students and faculty using the HAP email inbox; Drafting emails to students and faculty to:
o Responding to general inquiries about HAP office policies
o Updating researchers on the status of their submissions
o Sorting and triaging emails to the appropriate persons within HAP.
· Conducting an intake process for new research submissions, modifications, and renewals
· Preparing for IRB and IACUC meetings (generating meeting materials packets, set-up for meetings, may obtain and set up food and meeting snacks)
· Data entry to manage research submissions and project status
· Will work up to conducting protocol pre-reviews and exempt reviews by consulting with intra-office staff and/or using independent judgment to interpret and apply federal and state laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines to ensure the research integrity and compliance of IRB submissions.
· Scheduling HAP appointments with researchers, leading up to assisting with classroom presentations on HAP processes and/or IRB requirements.
· Must be available to work during the 2026 summer break
Prefer ability to commit to one year + in the role.
