Community Journalist

Claremont Courier seeks interns and part-time journalists

The Claremont Courier is looking for motivated college students and recent graduates who want real-world experience in community journalism.

If you’re interested in writing stories that matter and not just content for clicks, this is an opportunity to report on your community, build a portfolio of published work, and learn how local journalism actually operates.

For more than 118 years, the Courier has covered Claremont with fact-based reporting, award-winning photography, and a commitment to holding institutions accountable. At a time when local news is disappearing across the country, this work has never been more important.

What you’ll do:

  • Cover city council and school board meetings
  • Write news stories, features, and profiles
  • Report on local events, education, and community issues
  • Contribute ideas and develop your own story pitches

What you’ll gain:

  • Published bylines in a respected community newspaper
  • Hands-on reporting experience
  • Mentorship from an experienced editor
  • Exposure to real deadlines and newsroom workflow

Details:

  • Part-time or intern positions (flexible for student schedules)
  • Based in Claremont, CA (in-person reporting required)
  • Opportunity to grow into a full-time role

Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in writing and journalism
  • Some writing experience (school publications, internships)
  • Willingness to learn AP Style and reporting fundamentals
  • Comfortable meeting deadlines and asking questions

• Photography skills are a plus, but not required.

Compensation: Interns (less experience, seeking school credit) $250-400 stipend depending on hours worked. Students with experience (published stories, finished internships, school classes, other part-time experience) would receive $100 per assignment to start. Establish yourself as a strong journalist, the more work opportunities.

If you want to do meaningful work where accuracy, accountability, and community impact matter, we’d like to hear from you.

• Email a short introduction and writing samples to Editor Mick Rhodes at editor@claremont-courier.com.
