Director of Choirs & Organist

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s in music preferred, but not required, will consider equivalent experience 
  • Proficiency in leading worship with the organ, piano, and keyboard accompaniment. 
  • Ability to accompany vocal or instrumental soloist or ensembles. 
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn Lutheran worship practices and principles. 
  • Appreciation for, and knowledge of, a wide range of traditional musical styles and repertoire. 
  • Must be able to inspire and work with a large group of people
  • Skill at using music publishing software. 
  • Ability to inspire and work effectively and harmoniously with a staff team, and a wide range of volunteers. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

  • Provide visionary leadership and direction for all church vocal ensembles (Adult Choir, Children’s Choir) and bell choirs, overseeing all aspects of rehearsals, performances, and special events throughout the liturgical year. 
  • Select, prepare, and coordinate all choral, bell, and organ music for worship services, ensuring alignment with the liturgical calendar and the congregation’s musical heritage. 
  • Oversee the planning and execution of special musical events and programs, including the annual Christmas Program and other seasonal presentations, coordinating schedules, communications, and logistics. 
  • Lead traditional worship music using the organ or keyboard 
  • Work with the pastor and music staff to plan all regular and special worship services, following the overall direction specified by the worship committee. 
  • May opt to serve as the primary church musician for weddings and funerals. Members who desire to use other musicians may do so after receiving permission of the Director of Traditional Music and making appropriate arrangements with the Director of Traditional Music. 
  • Maintain a comprehensive library of church-owned traditional and sacred music, ensuring proper cataloging, storage, and accessibility for all musical groups under your direction. 
  • Continually seek to enable all who have gifts for music to serve God in worship by recruiting volunteer musicians and leading rehearsals. 
  • Provide coaching and coordination for all traditional special music soloists and ensembles. 
  • Maintain knowledge of the repertoire of sacred music, especially that which would be appropriate for Shepherd of the Hills
  • Arrange for substitute music leaders during vacations.
