Deion is the the done-for-you, anti-AI-slop Canva alternative for YouTube thumbnail design.

It's powered by Semantic Design Engine—our proprietary algorithm that transforms YouTube video titles into custom, download-ready thumbnails. Learn more at https://deion.io/.

We are looking for an undergraduate Semantic Graphic Design Engineering Intern for a fixed-scope, fixed-fee 1099 internship contract. This role is 100% remote in the United States.

Qualification for this opportunity requires submission of code & design portfolios to eng-jobs@mydataproduct.com, completion of a demo project, and at least 10 hours of synchronous meeting availability between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM Central Time on weekdays, for the next 6 months.

This role is not open to

  • Individuals on CPT/OPT/EAD
  • Recruiters
  • Agencies
  • Consulting companies
  • C2C arrangements

This role may be a good fit if

  • You are a "double threat", excelling at both graphic design and data product engineering
  • You believe that aesthetic choices must be defensible via symbolic rationale rather than just intuitive preference
  • You excel at designing algorithmic and autonomous systems that don't simply follow "if-this-then-that" rules
  • You are comfortable working 100% remotely as part of a distributed team
  • Your work products demonstrate a high level of attention to detail and the ability to see the big picture
  • Your aptitude, mindset, and ability to learn quickly make up for shortcomings in your current skill set
  • You resonate with our core values:
  • ....... 1. High performance, engagement, and reliability
  • ....... 2. Proper prioritization, timeliness, and risk mitigation
  • ....... 3. Outcome ownership, accountability, and meritocracy
  • ....... 4. Systems thinking, modularity, and automation
  • ....... 5. Excellence in execution and hyper-detail orientation
  • ....... 6. Documentation and asynchronous work
  • ....... 7. Resourceful initiative

This role may require you to

  • Engineer bespoke algorithmic workflows that apply Gestalt principles, typographic hierarchy, color theory, and other graphic design concepts to produce professional-grade, non-deterministic graphic designs
  • Architect algorithmic color selection logic that prioritizes semantic alignment over arbitrary choices
  • Develop programmatic validation systems that ensure graphic design deliverables meet production standards
  • Build robust asset-handling pipelines and error-correction logic to enable high-fidelity rendering and system reliability across varied design output formats
  • Leverage Claude Code to enable high-velocity, AI-driven development
  • Document system designs, source code, workflow designs, and engineering standards to enable solution modularity and knowledge sharing
  • Collaborate with teammates using Slack, Notion, Google Meet, and/or other software

An ideal candidate has

  • Strong proficiency in Python with a focus on writing clean, scalable code that bridges the gap between engineering logic and visual output
  • Deep understanding of professional graphic design fundamentals, including color temperature, saturation, value contrast, and psychological color alignment
  • Technical mastery of typography, with the ability to programmatically control kerning, tracking, leading, and line-break logic
  • The "engineer’s intuition" required to troubleshoot probabilistic systems and debug non-deterministic design outputs
  • Demonstrated systems thinking skills with the ability to map out intricate logic flows for complex visual processes
  • Practical experience deploying and managing applications within the Google Cloud ecosystem
  • Extensive experience using AI coding tools like Claude Code
  • The ability to decompose high-level, ambiguous objectives into a series of small, autonomous, and verifiable tasks
  • Experience using Git-based version control to manage codebases within a collaborative team setting
  • Excellent communication skills for explaining technical trade-offs and architectural decisions to both technical and non-technical peers
  • Emotional intelligence and coachability
