Sculptor Intern
About Funko
Funko is a pop culture lifestyle brand on a mission to make fans smile. From iconic collectibles to unexpected collaborations, we bring fandom to life through products that feel fresh, fun, and unmistakably Funko.
Role Summary
Funko is looking for a Sculpting Intern to support our Collectibles team in bringing characters to life in 3D. This internship is designed for an emerging sculptor who’s excited to learn real-world collectible development—from early sculpts and refinements to production-ready outputs—while collaborating with cross-functional partners like Product Development, Creative, and Production.
In addition to interning as a Sculptor, this role will have the opportunity to shadow on the Rendering side, gaining exposure to how sculpts are presented, visualized, and communicated through high-quality renders for reviews and approvals.
What You’ll Do
Sculpting Support
- Assist the Sculpting team with 3D character sculpting for Funko collectibles, based on style guides, reference, and creative direction.
- Support sculpt revisions and refinements based on internal feedback and licensor notes.
- Help prepare files for downstream workflows by maintaining clean organization, naming conventions, and version control.
- Create or update supporting elements (accessories, bases, simple props) to match character and brand styling.
- Participate in reviews and team critiques; incorporate feedback thoughtfully and efficiently.
- Collaborate with partners across Product Development, Licensing, and Production to support timelines and requirements.
- Rendering Shadowing (Learning Opportunity)
- Shadow rendering workflows used to present 3D sculpts for approvals and internal presentations.
- Learn how lighting, materials, and camera angles help communicate form, detail, and product intent.
- Support basic render prep tasks such as scene setup, file organization, and asset prep (as appropriate for skill level).
- Observe how rendering outputs are used to align Creative, Product, and Licensing stakeholders.
What You’ll Bring
- Currently pursuing (or recently completed) a degree in 3D Art, Animation, Industrial Design, Game Art, Character Design, or related field.
- A portfolio demonstrating strong 3D sculpting ability (characters preferred), including clean forms, appealing silhouettes, and attention to detail. Student work is welcome.
- Experience with at least one sculpting tool such as ZBrush, Blender, Maya, or similar (ZBrush preferred if applicable).
- Strong understanding of anatomy, proportion, and stylization (ability to match an established brand style is key).
- Comfortable receiving feedback and iterating quickly while keeping quality high.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and collaborative—able to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
Nice to Have
- Experience preparing models for manufacturing or 3D printing (watertight meshes, clean topology where needed, scale awareness).
- Familiarity with rendering tools/workflows (KeyShot, Blender rendering, Maya/Arnold, Substance, etc.).
- Experience working from licensed style guides or tight visual constraints.
- Passion for collectibles, character IP, and pop culture.
Internship Details
- Pay range: $20–$25 per hour
- Schedule: Approximately 20 hours per week
- On-site requirement: 4 days per week on-site
- Location: Either Burbank, CA or Everett, WA
Timing: Start before summer and wrap when school starts (typically mid-May through late August)
