Telescope Operator

Volunteers are a vital part of Lowell's dual mission to make astronomical discoveries and to educate the general public on those and other scientific concepts.

We currently have three primary volunteer positions in our public programs department which are:

Telescope Operator (night-time) - stationed at the Giovale Open Deck Observatory to operate high-powered telescopes for public viewing, including answering guests' questions about the celestial object being viewed

Gallery/Open House Host - stationed inside our new Astronomy Discovery Center, at either the Orbits Curiosity Zone for kids, or our Stardust Lab Astronomy Gallery with over 20+ interactive exhibits

Historic Locations Host - stationed at either Pluto Dome (used to discover Pluto), 24" Clark Telescope (built in 1896, and used to map the moon for NASA Apollo missions), or Rotunda Museum to welcome guests and provide history and background of Lowell and location specific information.
