Summer Bird Care Intern
DESCRIPTION:
A full-time, seasonal position under the direction of the Curator of Animals & Program Coordinator. The purpose of the internship is to provide a hands-on learning opportunity and field related work experience in avian husbandry and wildlife management. The Summer Bird Care Intern will assist staff with daily husbandry (diet preparation, feeding, cleaning of enclosures, general upkeep of facilities and property), assist and inform visitors at the Sanctuary, conduct species spotlights, and assist with rehabilitation of injured birds.
EXAMPLES OF WORK EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BY INTERN:
Bird Care
(All require training and approval of Curator of Animals that adequate skill levels have been achieved)
- Daily cleaning of enclosures
- Assist in food preparation and distribution
- Assist with rehabilitation of injured birds
- Care of nestling songbirds
Interpretation
- Answer phone inquiries by public
- Provide information for visitors
- Assist staff with Keeper Talks (requires adequate knowledge of species and avian ambassador’s story”)
Property Management
- Upkeep of Bird Enclosures
- General Grounds Maintenance
- Daily sweeping and mopping (as needed) of floors
- Trash removal from buildings
EXPECTATIONS:
A) Able to lift 50 pounds and physically able to negotiate trail system
B) Professional appearance, clean, neat and always respectful
C) Reliable and punctual and available to work weekends
D) Capable of completing tasks and projects unsupervised
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Currently enrolled at a college/ university
Valid Driver's License
Current Tetanus vaccine within 7 years
SCHEDULE: (May - August, Saturday - Wednesday)
Saturday: 8:00am-6:30pm
Sunday: 8:00am-4:00pm
Monday: 8:00am-1:00PM
Tuesday: 8:00am-4:00pm
Wednesday: 8:00am-4:00pm
STIPEND: $12/hour
