Exhibit Development Assistant

Job Title: Exhibit Development Assistant (Part-Time)

 Organization: Elkhorn Valley Museum

 Location: Norfolk, Nebraska 

Hours: 20 hours per week, scheduled over a 5-day workweek (includes weekends) 

Pay Rate: $15 per hour 

Position Summary: The Part-Time Exhibit Development Assistant supports the research, documentation, and public interpretation of exhibits at the Elkhorn Valley Museum. This role assists with historical research, drafting interpretive content, and organizing research materials, while working closely with the Executive Director to transform ideas into clear, engaging exhibits—from concept through execution. The ideal candidate is curious, creatively driven, and detail-oriented, with strong research and writing skills, an understanding of how visuals engage audiences, and the ability to translate ideas into compelling displays. A friendly, customer-service–oriented approach is essential when interacting with others, as this role contributes directly to exhibits that inform, inspire, and delight. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 • Conduct historical research to support exhibit content and interpretive goals • Assist in transforming exhibit ideas into engaging visual and textual narratives • Draft or edit exhibit labels, captions, or interpretive materials under guidance from the Executive Director • Compile and organize research findings, object files, and related documents for exhibit projects • Assist with public research requests, providing courteous and accurate information to visitors and community members • Design and organize materials with visitor experience in mind, creating clear and compelling visual storytelling • Support digitization, photography, or documentation of collections as needed • Work collaboratively with the Executive Director and other staff to help bring exhibit concepts to fruition, balancing creativity with interpretive goals • Perform other duties as assigned to support the Museum’s programs and operations

 Schedule Expectations 

• 20 hours per week, scheduled across five days • Includes some weekend hours, the museum is open Tuesday – Sunday between Memorial Day and Labor Day and Tuesday – Saturday during the Fall and Winter • Schedule may vary based on seasonal needs and special projects 

Qualifications Required

 • Strong research and writing skills • Attention to detail and ability to organize information effectively • Understanding of how visuals engage audiences and enhance visitor experience • Ability to work independently while collaborating with small teams • Professional and friendly approach to public interactions • Basic computer skills; experience with spreadsheets, word processing, or databases Preferred • Coursework or experience in history, museum studies, public history, exhibit design, or a related field • Experience assisting with exhibits, educational programming, or interpretive design • Interest in local or regional history • Ability to balance creativity with interpretive and educational goals • Familiarity with graphic design
