Music and Chorus Teacher (Part-Time)

Music and Chorus Teacher at Elementary School (Part-Time)

Potomac Crescent Waldorf School seeks a part-time music and chorus teacher for the 2025-2026 school year to join our dedicated faculty and vibrant community at our newly renovated school in historic Old Town Alexandria. This is a salaried position.

The music and chorus teacher is responsible for supporting the musical development of first-fifth grade students in alignment with Waldorf education principles. They will plan and teach a 40-minute weekly music class for each of the five grades classes and a 40-minute weekly combined chorus class for fourth and fifth graders, for a total of six classes each week. Through engaging lessons, collaboration with class teachers, and participation in some school festivals, the music and chorus teacher will help create a rich environment for music enjoyment, appreciation, and connection at our school that can enhance the overall curriculum.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate music lessons for first-fifth grades that align with Waldorf education principles
  • Through positive music experiences, such as musical games, movement, and other activities, nurture student enjoyment and appreciation of music.
  • In an experiential and developmentally-appropriate way, incorporate a variety of musical concepts, including rhythm, melody, harmony, and some music theory
  • Within the curriculum guidelines, teach children to play the pentatonic flute and the diatonic flute
  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation
  • Create an overall teaching plan for the year, keeping in mind seasonal progression and incorporating some school-celebrated festivals
  • Keep records of student progress to help contribute to parent-teacher conferences and to help with end-of-year report-writing
  • Write narrative end-of-year reports for each student
  • Maintain appropriate professional development through self-study

The ideal candidate will be a trained music teacher who has an understanding of Waldorf pedagogy or a commitment to learning about it, a love of teaching, excellent classroom management skills, and strong communication and collaboration skills. Openness to working with a mentor is essential. 

Education and Experience Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or a related field (preferred)

- Experience teaching music to children (preferred)

- Basic piano and recorder skills
