Sarasota Bay Explorers is seeking a candidate with a background in Marine Science, Biology, or Environmental Science to fill a part-time position with a possibility for full time during our high season months. Our ideal candidate is enthusiastic about hands on environmental education, can work well with the public, and has a passion for learning. Please read below for details.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Narration of a 2-hour eco tour departing from Mote Aquarium's former location on City Island, discussing the ecosystem, marine mammal population, native and migratory shorebirds, birds of prey and any other wildlife encountered.
  • Deployment and retrieval of an otter trawl net with or without assistance and subsequent identification of fish and invertebrates found within.
  • Participation in launching and docking the vessel and all necessary steps, including releasing and securing lines.
  • Taking reservations for passengers on all cruises through an online booking application both in person and over the phone.
  • Answering questions by phone or in person about current cruise times, pricing, and availability with accuracy.
  • Communicating with customers clearly regarding trip information.

*Written narration is provided while in training, addition of relevant and interesting factual information to narrations is encouraged.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Minimum education of Bachelor’s Degree within the Biological Sciences.
  • Dedication and enthusiasm towards educating the public about regional flora and fauna, Florida’s natural resources, and local history.
  • Clear communication skills.
  • Ability to relay factual information effectively to a variety of audiences in an entertaining and engaging manner.
  • Ability to communicate with the public in a courteous and respectful way and answering questions from the public tactfully.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 20+ pounds.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification (or willing to obtain one).
  • Ability to pass a drug test in order to become a member of the Maritime Consortium.

Bonus (not required but strongly desired):

  • Knowledge of Sarasota Bay wildlife and plant life including marine fish and invertebrates, shorebirds, marine mammals, and mangrove trees.
  • Knowledge of local Sarasota history.
  • Prior experience on vessels and/or knowledge of common nautical knots.
  • Customer service experience.
