Research Assistant: Microdevice Device & Sensor Design for Nervous System

Research Assistant: Microdevice Device & Sensor Design for Nervous System

Case Western Reserve University – Cleveland, OH

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated and innovative research assistant to support a multidisciplinary research program focused on understanding nervous system function and developing advanced device systems. This role involves the design and integration of microdevices, sensors, and engineered platforms for studying neural activity, tissue responses, and physiological interfaces. The successful candidate will collaborate with a diverse team of neuroscientists, engineers, and biologists to create experimental tools that replicate and interface with nervous system structures and signals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and fabricate microdevices using soft lithography and related techniques for cell culture and neural electrophysiology
  • Develop and integrate biosensors for monitoring neural or physiological signals
  • Interface microfluidic and sensor systems with biological tissues or model organisms to study nervous system responses
  • Collaborate on data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation related to neural activity, tissue behavior, or device performance
  • Contribute to the preparation of scientific publications, figures, presentations, and reports

Required Skills

  • Experience in microdevice design and fabrication (e.g., photolithography, PDMS soft lithography)
  • Familiarity with sensor design and integration, especially for electrophysiological or chemical sensing applications
  • Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Fusion360) and 3D printing technologies
  • Competency in data analysis and visualization tools using programming (e.g., MATLAB, Python)
  • Strong problem-solving and collaboration skills in interdisciplinary settings

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with neuronal or physiological electrophysiology and signal processing
  • Familiarity with electronics, microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi), or embedded systems
  • Experience with biological tissue or animal handling is a plus

Education Requirements

  • B.S. or M.S. in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Neuroscience, Bioengineering, or a related discipline
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic statistical knowledge and familiarity with experimental design principles
