Aquatic Student Manager

April 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I love that the job itself is very flexible. I get to set my own hours and work when I want. For me as a current student that makes a whole world of difference. Specifically this summer I loved all of the opportunities that were provided to me by the Campus Rec department of SFSU. This summer I had the opportunity to network with other people through a NIRSA workshop as well as grow my skills through class provided at our facility. I love that I am apart of a team who supports my growth as a student, a professional and an individual.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had the opportunity to see my family more this summer but due to the demands of the job I spent most of my summer up here in the Bay rather than at home with my family.

Advice

Always embrace every opportunity given to you through this company. Even when the Monday evening meetings are on something boring like time management or how to send better emails, listen to the advice you're being given. Many people don't have access to free resources like the ones Campus Rec provides their employees. Besides, you never know when you might end up using some of the tools you have been given.

Research Methodology Intern

June - August 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I loved how the faculty and staff in the internship did whatever it would take to help us learn and grow in the Marketing research field.

What I wish was different

Even though we had to make the best of it and the internship transitioned online, If there was no virus present having it in person would've been an even greater experience.

Advice

If you are willing to put in the work, you will be rewarded greatly and actually come out of the internship learning a lot that you may use as leverage in the future.

FYE Intern

June 2021 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

The job/internship was only a month

What I wish was different

I wish that the leads/directors of the internship were not as demanding and a little less picky with their demands of me, as I was doing what they asked but I wasn’t copying the leads’ personal style. We interns were given a list of SFSU student to call up to 3 times before the end of the month. I had finished this requirement about a week early because I had summer classes with finals on the last week of the month. The leads/directors informed me that they would be giving me extra work from another intern because they were unable to finish their load by the end of the month. I asked if they would pay me extra and they said no because I finished my work before the end of the month and the extra wouldn’t be considered overtime. I also wish that the internship had informed us in the application notice that they weren’t going to pay us directly at the end of the month (June 30, 2021), they still have not paid us nor have they told us when we are getting paid.

Advice

It’s a more demeaning and taxing job than thought of at the time of applying so pace yourself.
