The location of my job is very convenient and the pay is not bad for an entry position. The customers actually have not been hard to deal with either.

What I wish was different

First of all, I wish there was an employee discount because Publix is known to be a bit expensive. The orientation is a bit lackluster and does not teach a lot of the actual skills an employee would need for the job. Cashier training itself left much to be desired and I noticed myself learning the skills needed on the job, which is confusing because with handling money and coupons you would expect Publix to want their employees to be well-versed before actually handling them.

Advice

In closing the store, expect your team to not be helpful and expect to stay later than the hours you are actually scheduled. It is a hassle that Publix boasts about respecting customers' time but they clearly do not respect the time of their employees, many of whom are full-time students who have other commitments outside of Publix.

What I liked

I loved the training and the readiness to answer any questions that I would have. I love the fact that Publix caters to their shareholders and they spend equally as much time trying to take care of their customers' needs and their workers' needs. I also love the fact that you're able to move up pretty quickly in the company and the benefits are amazing.

.You must be able to work under pressure or atleast learn how to deal with pressure. There are very stressful moments; especially if you take your job very seriously. At the end of the day, you should relax and always do your best.

What I liked

The people I worked with were some of the kindest and most caring I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I was able to make lasting relationships with them and with my regular customers. I also got a lot of experience working with people and dealing with different situations, from happy interactions to having someone yell in my face. I learned to balance multiple responsibilities and to interact with those of a higher ranking within the chain.

What I wish was different

I do wish it had been a more set schedule. They have you set availability when you first arrive, but they almost always have problems scheduling you appropriately. I had to call more than once to get them to fix my schedule for the week because they disregarded my available hours. It got annoying after awhile.

Advice

I would say to always smile and be understanding with those around you, even when you feel like yelling back at them. That will only make the situation worse than it already is.
